Abacus Team Member Kevin Cagney Climbs Mount Everest!
After 51 long days away from home, Abacus Logistics team member Kevin Cagney stood on top of the world in the early hours of May 17th, 2023!
However, instead of immediately returning to Base Camp to celebrate a successful summit, he spent a second night in the South Col (Camp 4 – 25,920 ft.), in hopes of summitting Lhotse, the fourth tallest mountain in the world at 27,940 ft.
Camp 4 sits just below the “Death Zone.” It's earned this name because the environment is so inhospitable due to the cold and lack of oxygen per breath (roughly 33% compared to sea level) that the human body cannot survive for long periods of time at this elevation.
After a short rest at Camp 4, Kevin completed back-to-back 8,000m peaks by summitting Lhotse on May 18th!
Climbing Mount Everest is a serious undertaking that requires years of mental and physical training. When asked how he prepared for Everest, Kevin said:
“You’ve got to be very committed to your goal to be successful on Everest. In the year leading up to my expedition, I trained 20-25 hours per week in preparation for the final summit push. That dedication requires a fair bit of sacrifice, and that can be pretty challenging.”

“...having a successful summit day strategy comes down to layers of planning. It ranges from the food and water you bring with you, to the speed you climb, the gear you wear on summit day, and how well you trained for months before you ever set foot on the mountain. The team you have on your side is also critical. Without the support structure that I had, it would have been massively difficult. It’s about bringing all your systems together in a way that ensures you can handle whatever comes your way.”
